Understanding Personal Lubricants

A clear, practical guide to lubricant types — water-based, silicone, oil-based — and how to choose the right one.

Afterglow

Personal lubricants are one of the most overlooked wellness accessories, and one of the most useful. This guide covers the main types and what to consider when choosing.

Water-based lubricants

Water-based lubricants are the most versatile and widely recommended type. They are safe to use with all toy materials, easy to clean up, and compatible with all types of condoms. They may need to be reapplied during extended use as they can dry out, but they are the most practical choice for most situations.

Silicone-based lubricants

Silicone lubricants last longer than water-based options and are not absorbed by the body. They are excellent for use in water. One important note: silicone lubricants can degrade silicone toy surfaces over time, so they should not be used with silicone products.

Oil-based lubricants

Oil-based lubricants are long-lasting and feel rich. However, they are not compatible with latex condoms and can be more difficult to clean up. They are generally better suited to external use or massage.

Tip When in doubt, choose water-based. It is the safest, most compatible, and most practical choice for most uses.

What to avoid

Avoid products with added fragrances, flavours, or warming agents unless you know they agree with you. Simple formulations are generally less likely to cause irritation.
